American Idol Top Five Perform and Haley Steals the Show

Wow, I was surprised to hear Ryan Seacrest say that there are only three more weeks of American Idol.  Tonight the top five contestants will perform two songs each–one modern, one classic.  It’s easy to say that Jacob is going home this week, but will he?  Remember that every week after someone goes home, the votes from that person end up going to another contestant.  So in other words, all of Casey Abrams fans will be voting for one of the remaining five.  That changes the whole dynamic from the previous week.

Out of the first five performances, I would have to give props to Lauren Alaina, Scotty McCreery and Haley Reinhart.  I know I’m going to hear from all the James Durbin fans, but I thought he sounded bad on his first song.  Same goes for Jacob Lusk.  Of course, the judges loved both James and Jacob and they didn’t like Haley.  I thought she did a great job on that song and that she made the correct decision in choosing it.

When James sang his second song, was there a dry (female) eye in the house?  His authentic emotions are going to be hard to beat in this competition.  As the judges said, his song wasn’t pitch-perfect, but he continuously wins over the audience week after week.

Jacob’s second song was better than his first number, but I don’t think it can save him this week.  The other four performers are stronger than him in talent, in stage presence and in fan base.

Unchained Melody is one of my favorite songs ever.  However, I thought Lauren did this song too softly for my tastes.  The judges tiptoed around her (as usual). Didn’t she look absolutely beautiful in that gown?

My DH commented that Scotty always picks the right song.  He stays true to himself and his style of singing, thank goodness!  He’s been working on his stage presence too–did you notice?  He’s learning how to work that camera.

Haley Reinhart kicked butt with The House of the Rising Sun!  She showed her range and her sexiness.  I have to agree with Randy…this was the best performance of the night.

Hopefully, Jacob Lusk will be voted off tomorrow because it would be a true shame if it’s one of the other four contestants.  Good night.  Bloggergal

My favorite was Haley with a song I grew up with and an all time favorite House of the Rising Sun. I liked Laurens Unchained Melody but felt she gave up on the high note. She could have done it. I’m actually happy it’s almost over it means summer is coming. Good luck idol contestants.

I have to agree with the judges and my fellow bloggers… House of the Rising Sun… best performance of the night. And Haley sure needed it! Doing Lady Gaga’s song was not a good choice, but I don’t think it’s Haley’s fault. Sounded good at the time, etc. It was the weakest of the first round. The judges are right… you need to choose a well known song and kill it. Like Fantasia did with ‘Summertime’ and Katherine did with ‘Over the Rainbow’.

I love ‘Unchained Melody’, but thought the arrangement was very terrible, although Lauren sang it beautifully. I think my problem with her, is that she is a little too young, and am not a fan of 16 year olds doing older material. I think she looks uncomfortable performing, and this is probably due to her age and experience. She was beautiful in the dress.

Best Overall Job Done Tonight… Scotty. Both songs were excellent, and he is growing as a performer… first song was Great! He reminded me of Kenny Chesney. Was it Randy who said… this is like being at a Scotty Concert. Very Professional… both songs. I think the thing that bugs me about Scotty, is his looks do not match his voice. He is way too slight and ‘squeaky clean’, and I think Steven’s comment was correct. He needs to let his hair grow a little bit, I think. But… no facial hair on this guy. Good job tonight.

James was just okay for me tonight. The first song was best… did not care for the second. I am not of a fan of the tearjerker’s that AI (and all reality shows) love to exploit. I do think the contest is between James and Scotty at this point.

One of Jacob’s downfalls will be his outfits. Not only are they silly, but very ill fitting. They all seem to be a size too small, which only accentuates his body type to poor advantage. I was not as wowed as the judges with his songs. My hope is that he goes, but BG is right… who is going to get Casey’s votes.

I guess Auntaanne and I must be the same age… I grew up on Rising Sun too… it was the first song I learned to play on guitar. I was in college at the time, and it was a wonderful time for music… the Beatles and the British Invasion. I saw Bob Dylan with 600 other people, The Stones with about 2,500 in attendance… and Eric Burdon and The Animals do ‘House of the Rising Sun’. And… The Righteous Brothers! Those were some great times.

Well, forgive my nostalgia… but that’s what Music is all about isn’t it? Evoking feelings…

I am torn between Scotty and Haley. Both of them did an great job. Jacob should go home this week. Can’t wait to see what happens tonight.

I am hoping Jacob goes home too. To me, he isn’t idol material. Next week, I want Scotty gone….as I don’t really care for country music. Sorry folks, that’s only my opinion. I would like to see James and Lauren in the final two. I’m ok with Haley and James also.

Ted….you’re writing books here I see. I thought JT was the one that did that. He taught you well.

Haley and James may end up as Top 2. Scott seems to have fallen off. He and Lauren may also split the country votes.

I have to agree that Haley’s performance was excellent. I also think Scotty doesn’t have the edge to stay in it until the end.
