David Archuleta Will Win American Idol 7

For the past couple of weeks, when asked who I thought brought it and who left it on American Idol, I’ve consistently said “the kid” as my pick to beat.

The kid is David Archuleta, and after Tuesday night’s rendition of John Lennon’s “Imagine,” I suspect all those who shrugged when I issued those sentiments will understand why I think he’s the favorite to win Idol Season 7.

In fact, I think his performance was not only the first “moment” of the season, I think it was comparable to Carrie Underwood’s “Alone” performance in Season 4, the one in which Simon Cowell proclaimed that she would win the title and sell more records than any other Idol in history. It’s probably more accurate, spatially, to compare it to LaToya London singing “All By Myself” in Season 3.

Here’s the deal with “the kid” though. Not only do I think David Archuleta wins American Idol, I think he becomes the show’s first legitimate male pop star.

He’ll do Broadway. He’ll have a legitimate hit record on mainstream radio. He’ll be on TV. He is essentially a perfect pop star, and here’s why I think this competition is o-v-e-r.

1. He will dominate the tween and teen vote. Tweens and teens will vote a billion times for him. One look at DialIdol.com tonight, and I saw that David had a 30 share while second place had like a 7. Unless somebody from the girls’ side of things picks it up and fast, David is going to build up an insurmountable edge in teenybopper girls.

2. He will win the grandmama vote. Grandmamas like good voices, good personalities and clean-cut kids. The Kid’s got it all in that regard.

3. He will at least partially pick up the musician vote. Yes, Jason Castro can play a guitar, although it’s unfortunate he’s yet been able to tune it. And, yes, David Cook can play the chords from Free’s “All Right Now.”

However, Idol is still a singer’s competition, and David Archuleta is far and away the best male singer. Based on all that I’ve heard, he’s far and away the one singer I’d pick to work with, to record a demo for me, etc.

What’s scary is that it’s early.

Fact is, the reason Archuleta didn’t sing the first verse to “Imagine” is because it referenced the notion that there is no heaven and hell. David’s family is uber-religious, and that doesn’t bug me one iota, nor does it sway me toward his camp relative to the show.

However, the way he handled the question from the judges was brilliant, focusing on the positive instead of making it a point to preach to 33 million people, which would have been an enormous turn off to voters. So, if I could add a No. 4 to my list, I’d note that David’s obviously a savvy kid. He’s been in this parade before.

Now, if I didn’t review everyone else this week, it’s because THE story when you wake up tomorrow will center on Archuleta. And what could make him all the more of a phenomenon this year is that it’s not only becoming clear that he’s the most talented of this season’s Idol crop, but he still looks like an underdog. At his stature, he’ll always look like an underdog.

But with that voice, I assure you, he will be crowned Idol champ come May.

That’s interesting about the verse choice stuff. Very insightful. I appreciate your intelligent analysis, and I agree that he’ll win, but like you said, it’s still early. It is his to lose.

David has sung the earlier verses in “Imagine” before, exactly as written (it’s on YouTube, check it out), so religious principles are not the reason he chose the third verse to sing on AI.

As for the rest of your comments, I agree with you.

Unless the voting get’s screwey, he’ll win it. He has all the elements they’re looking for. Plus, teenage girls f-ing love him. They will carry him a long way - even if he couldn’t sing (which he can).

Are you for real. I hope he doesn’t win. I like David Cook way better. I don’t get all the hype about this kid. He’s ok. But I don’t think he’s that great! And could some one tell him not to lick his lips so much while he’s singing!

I totally agree with your opinion above. yet it’s too early to predict, but I’m quite sure that David Archuleta will win the contest. I also agree with what Simon Cowell said about him at day two Hollywood Auditions (when David sang Heaven by Bryan Adam) “You young, you goodlooking, you likeable, and you have a really good voice.” And you can see now that Paula’s word getting true, “All the world say, I just can’t wait” (ofkrz for Archuleta’s performance)Oh My GOD! I million times really like this cute guy!

I can’t stand David Archuletta! I think he makes every song he sings very boring and seem to drag on forever! David Cook is way better, although if he wins, they will probably make him sing Corney songs, in which case he is probably better off not winning. I think Syesha is really good too. Not only does she have a voice, but at least, unlike David Archuletta, she has a stage presence and personality to go along with it. That said, I think David Archuletta will win because all the teenie boppers love him and he is never in the bottom, but I think Syesha should win.

Shell Says:

David Archuletta is so boring!!! Can he sing anything but a ballad?? Come on … I want to see him take some of the risks that some of the other contestants have taken. The one time he did try something upbeat it was HORRIBLE!!!! David Cook deserves to win, hands down.

Oh Please, I am a gramma, a 60 year old gramma, and David is a kid who has been groomed by Daddy for the meal ticket he will provide. David is so programmed he sings one song….the ballad….speaks with no genuine emotion…other than “oh shucks”…Give me real, gritty…and risk taking. This gramma is voting for David Cook.

idolmamma Says:

As a gramma of sixty years old you are embarrassing and should be ashamed of yourself. David is a sensitive and wonderful example of what many teens today are lacking. He has true morals is humble and respectful of other, YOU could probably learn a few lessons from him. That said, David Cook is wonderful too. They are both winners to me!

Jade Says:

David Cook is the better performer. If Archie wins I will never watch idol again. Shades of Taylor Hicks…..

Joy Says:

DAVID ARCHULETA was AMAZING!!! He came ready to win and executed with brilliance! David Cook was average in his performances last night…if you want to be the ‘American Idol’, you must be much better than average and come ready to compete. David A. won my votes hands down!

Lauren Says:

To IdolmammaSays: VERY well put. I agree with you 100%.

tulsafan Says:

I think David Cook threw the competition…..maybe he all ready has a better deal, maybe he didn’t want to be on the Idol leash for the next year or maybe he knows David A needs the win to keep his dad off his back.
Both are great performers; two different genres

Interviewing Another Individual

Anna: What’s your opinion on this season’s American Idol?

Almira: I think that American Idol is a very good show however sometimes it is

not fair.

Anna: Who was your favorite contestant from the Top 12 and why?

Almira: My favorite contestant was Brooke White because

Anna: Do you think the judging was fair?

Almira: No because Syesha should have gone home. She shouldn’t have been in

the top in the first place.

Anna: Do you think that David Cook deserved to win?

Almira: He had the same chance as David Archuleta to win, but I think David

Archuleta wanted it more than Cook. Yes, he did deserve to win.

Anna: What did you like the best from American Idol?

Almira: The Bird Man.

Anna: Did you vote by phone or texts?

Almira: I voted by phone. I voted for every blonde as well as David Cook..

Anna: What do you think about the way voting is set up? Do you think that

voting via texts should be available to people using other cellular companies?

Almira: I think that voting is unfair because I can’t vote through texting because I

don’t have AT&T. It is also unfair to all the other Americans that want to

vote by texting.

Anna: How long did you wait until you actually got through?

Almira: Well, I actually waited a couple of minutes before I got through..

Anna: Who is your favorite judge?

Almira: My favorite judge is Simon Cowell because he is very harsh to the

contestants.

Anna: Did you learn anything from American Idol?

Almira: I learned not to only base my opinion on how the person looks, but also

the quality their voice possesses.

Anna: Did you watch last year’s American Idol?

Almira: Yes I did, however I did not like the winner.

Anna: Do you think that American Idol should be so controlling over the

contestants that win, or come close to winning?

Almira: No they shouldn’t because they should not choose what type of music

they listen to.

Anna: What do you think it takes to win American Idol?

Almira: I think it takes popularity and the ability to sing.

Anna: Will you ever audition for American Idol?

Almira: Yes next year! Anna and I will go to St. Louis to audition with the song

“Miracle”.

K.M What did you think of the contestants and of the show this year?

ac: well i thought this year’s American Idol contest had very talented contestants with great potential. i found it very entertaining and i felt like the competition was very tight. I feel that the competitors in the show have become better since last year season because last eason, i felt, many competitors in the show who made it far did not to deserve to go as far as they did. I thought many Americans were voting on people on reasons other than singing talent or performance reasons. This year, however, I felt that many of the contestants who did go far had great musical potential.

K.M: Who was your favotire contestants and why?

ac: I had many that I liked, three in particular. I really liked David Archuleta, David Cook, and Jason Castro. I think David Archuleta has such an amazing voice for being so young. He is so talented and has such a genuine and pure voice.David Cook also is a great performer. It comes to him naturally. He is such a great entertainer and can keep audience in awe, I also thought Jason Castro had a beautiful voice. He has such a soft and calming voice that can soothe a person. I really loved his singing and hid unique person.

K.M: Who was you least contestant out of the top twelve and why?

ac: I didn’t really like David Hernandez. I thought his voice was amateur and many times it was pretty pitchy and unporffesional-like. I thought he thought he was at many times better than he actually was. I also thought Syesha was a mediocre singer. I don’t think she was as good as she thought she was. She thought she had strong vocals but they were not as strong as other contestant’s.

K.M: Who do you with went further in the competition than they actually did?

ac: I really wish Brooke have gone further and have taken Syesha’s place in the top three. She has beautiful vocals with much variety. Her voice was pure and hippy-like. She was very taented with her voice and piano-playing and she would make a wonderful Idol. She also had great stage-presence and a great personality. Many people would easily relate to her because of her down-to-earth stage presence.

K.M: How do you judge the voting process and the fairness of it?

ac: I believe the voting process is somewhat unfair. Because of experioence, I think that many people who call in don’t have thier votes counted beacuse of the busy lines that you often hear. I also think that it is unfair that people who have text messaging have a better chance of casting their votes that people who call in. Also so many people like to mess with American Idol so they vote for the worst contestant and last of all many people abuse speed-dialers to cast and unfair amount of votes for one contestant.

K.M: What do you think of the spin-offs compared to American Idol?

ac: I think many spin-offs of AMerican Idol are very entertaining and I think they are good because they are like American Idol but for different areas of talent. I really like the spin-off Dancing with the Stars because it is so fun to watch celebrities trying to keep up with professional dancers. Many of the spin-offs are pretty good but not as successful as American Idol.

David Archuleta has an amazing voice and he’s only 17. He stuck to his style all season and did not change just to win votes. He is not a pop star and will do much better not having to go down the route that most popular singers go, screaming and shouting out those songs we hear on the radio. He is young and will develop with more experience, well done.

You were right about David winning, but you had the wrong David. Nice call though, he almost did it.

Gravatar
marylee1944 Says:

To those who say David Archuleta can only sing ballads,I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it one more time..David Archuleta can sing any genre of song…everytime he tried to branch out and sing an upbeat song, the judges put him down and, quite frankly, I loved every performance he gave..so they were just nit-picking.
Secondly, can we set the record straight about the votes…there was a 12% difference between the two (56% vs 44%), so it could not have been a 12 Million vote difference UNLESS 100 Million were cast. 12% based on 97.5 Million is a very small margin as I see it.
David Archuleta will go on to be a huge success. He has the entire package going for him. He is the real deal as well as being humble.
GO DAVID!! (we’ll be waiting and listening).
